In an island which we cant get out of.....yet!

Humans are one of the evolutionary success stories with the ability to think and speak. With these special attributes, we were assigned the duty of upholding and safekeeping the world and to care for the various species that inhibits the world. However, in our quest for technological advancements, we have neglected to consider the effects of our actions on Mother Nature.
We are suffocating ourselves with our daily carbon emission. If nthg is done now, we will be the cause of our own demise! World governments notably the EU have already done their part why administering carbon trading and are trying their best to meet to Kyoto protocol.
So what can normal citizens do? Since we burn efuel to get electricity and power our cars, it is only fit if we were to replace them with renewable and non-polluting energies. For homes, we can go solar which are getting cheaper and more efficiently yearly. Our cars (which are major carbon emitters) should be replaced with those of smart cars, hybrid cars and etc. Smart cars and hybrid cars run partially on electric power which could be recharged at new electrical point. There are also hydrogen powered engines of BMW which have 2 fuel tanks – one on normal fuel and one on hydrogen fuel-. They are only minor steps towards automobiles which are fully independent of hydrocarbon fuels. Yet, w/o these minor steps, we would we end up?
I’m half way thru convincing my dad to set up solar panels in our home (currently undergoing renovation). We Malaysians live in the tropics which are bountiful in sunlight and our rivers are designed for hydroelectric generation. We have monsoon seasons which make wind a feasible choice of energy. Yet, since we all seem to be apathetic bout nature and constantly deceiving ourselves that the world will last forever, I do not see much activity to promote renewable energy here.
We should bear in mind that we all live in an island and this is an island which we hv not yet found a way out of and may be out last stronghold. Go green people!
